5 THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A FRENCH BULLDOG

When it comes to buying your first French bulldog, the process can be somewhat confusing and stressful.  If you’re buying a quality Frenchie, then you will likely be spending quite a bit of money.  You’ll want to take some time to prepare yourself for what you’re getting into.  You should consider what to expect when you bring the puppy home.  You’ll want to also be thinking of what color Frenchie to choose.  And there’s the big question, “what breeder should you buy the puppy from?”  Here are a few things to consider before you purchase a puppy.

1.        Understanding the decision and journey you are embarking on -   When you bring a puppy into your home, there is a huge responsibility on your part to invite this new member into your family.  A puppy requires a lot of love and attention.  The puppy will need your time and will keep you busy feeding them, playing with them and cleaning up after them.  If you are going to be traveling all the time for work or you’re a college student with very limited time, this may not be a great time to own a Frenchie.  This is a huge decision that you should take the time to thoroughly think through to make sure you are ready.

2.        Finding a good Veterinarian - Once you decide to move forward with getting a Frenchie, you will want to start looking for a solid Veterinarian.  You will want to consider the financial costs and that there will be Veterinarian bills.  I recommend asking people you know with small breed dogs what vet they use.  If you can’t make any progress with that, then look up local vet’s online and call them to ask if they have experience with French bulldogs.  It would also be a good idea to do some online research on common health issues that French Bulldogs have.

3.        Decide what color Frenchie you want -   Simply go online and look at the all the different colors.  Keep in mind that the more exotic colors like New Shade Isabella and Merle French Bulldogs are generally going to cost more.  It would be a good idea to ask a handful of breeders how much puppies cost so you have an idea and can compare the prices.  This will also give you an idea of how the pricing compares to what you are willing to spend.

4.        Finding a reputable breeder - This is a very critical step because you don’t want to get ripped off and the market is flooded with breeders who breed unhealthy animals.  I would ensure that the breeder does health testing on their dogs.  When you look for a French Bulldog breeder, you’re going to want one that is knowledgeable and has a professional website.  I would steer clear from small back-yard breeders who do not have a professional online presence.  Their website should spell out that they care about where they place their puppies.  Usually, they will have a puppy application that asks very specific question so they can place a puppy with a responsible owner.  In addition, they should have a contract that you agree on.  Lastly, they should have no hesitation in answering all your questions and should provide as many photos and videos as requested.  Whatever you do, take your time and don’t rush this decision.

5.        Research on French Bulldogs – the French Bulldog breed requires a whole lot of love and companionship to thrive and be happy.  They generally have very easy-going temperaments with the sole goal of pleasing their owner.  They are low energy dogs for the most part, but sometimes get a short bursts of energy and sprint all over the house and yard.  This is called the Frenchie zoomies.  It’s very entertaining to watch!  Frenchies are extremely good with kids of all ages and are amazing family dogs.  They can be very gaseous at times and have sensitive stomachs.  Some pet owners prefer to put them on a raw diet.  They love to sleep and lounge around the house.  They snore quite often, especially while sleeping and running around.  I suggest you take it a step further and do your own research as well online, so you can gain a better understanding of the breed.
